CREW East Bay President’s Message
By Kristen Thall Peters
Dear Members,
Can you believe we are more than half way through 2019?  Where did the year go?
CREW Network's Leadership Summit was held this summer in Kansas City, Missouri.  Malinder Bhan and Lauren Jennings attended as our chapter delegates.  CREW East Bay's Sponsorship Committee Chair, Sonia Sharma, and I also attended.  CREW Network President and former CREW East Bay President, Holly Neber, ran an informative and strategic leadership summit.
A focus of the summit was on sponsorship strategies.  Our chapter sponsors are vital to our chapter's operation, growth and the continued advancement of women in our local commercial real estate market.  We all learned to better understand what they value with their participation with CREW, as well as new strategies to help keep them engaged.
Another valuable session focused on our chapter's use of LinkedIn.  With the help of the information learned at the summit and the input from CREW East Bay's Marketing Committee now led by former CREW East Bay President, Lisa Starratt, we are in the process of transforming our LinkedIn group to a page which we hope will be more valuable to you, as our members.  Look for changes coming soon!
I also attended more intimate gatherings, including with our CREW Network Champion Director, our CREW Network Board liaison, Tiffany English, and other chapter presidents and chapter champions from our region.  We want to inspire you to support the Foundation through individual donations and implementing local career reach programs, such as UCREW.  Our Chapter Champion, Cynthia Wheeler, our Programs Committee and I are very excited to be working with the Haas School of Business's Fisher Center for Real Estate Policy at the University of California, Berkeley and its Undergraduate Real Estate Club (aka UREC) to resume CREW East Bay's UCREW program this fall to introduce young women to the many and varied career opportunities in commercial real estate and increase our pipeline to our industry.
Another session was a leadership meeting with Holly Neber and other presidents of various CREW chapters.  One of the primary issues for discussion was the use of reserves which she strongly encouraged us to spend, including to support our policies, examples of which could vary from simply sending more chapter members to leadership summits and convention to paying for high quality speakers for our programs.  Your East Bay Board will evaluate these strategies to determine what brings the most value to you as our members.  Regarding programs, most every chapter surveys their members after every event to receive immediate feedback.  We look forward to receiving your honest feedback so we can provide better value for your membership and sponsorship.
Holly also announced that CREW Network is rebranding with a new logo, etc. to be announced at the upcoming convention.  Join us at CREW convention in Orlando, Florida to be among the first to view.
The CREW Network Convention is September 25-27th, in Orlando (less than eight weeks away!).  We have ten members registered so far, including our chapter's convention scholarship recipient, Nancy Morse.  We would love for you to join us!
Convention is earlier this year (it was in October the last three years) and registration rates will increase after August 16th.  Having participated in convention long before I was a member of the CREW East Bay Board, I can tell you that there is great value and business benefits to gain from attending the convention, including:
  • Opportunities to explore innovative, industry-leading projects and developments through exclusive learning excursions
  • Access to 1,200+ commercial real estate leaders for deal making and business networking opportunities
  • Valuable knowledge through 35+ industry-focused learning opportunities, including pre-convention workshops, mega sessions, general sessions, conversation corners and breakout sessions
View the full schedule to see all of the industry content and networking opportunities.
The link to register is  Please do not hesitate to give me a call should you have any questions, including if you want a sample request to provide to your employer to request its support to attend the convention.  I have also booked a few extra rooms so please feel free to give me a call if you want to attend convention but are unable to reserve a room at the convention hotel.  I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you there!  KTP
